Underfloor heating case study
Products: TileFix-18® overfloor system, Quantum RF thermostats
We were contacted by an installer who needed to fit underfloor heating (UFH) in a 78m2 single-storey lodge in Lancashire. This striking timber-framed property has vaulted ceilings, floor-to-ceiling glass panels and an open-plan kitchen, dining and living area, creating a large area that required UFH.
The initial enquiry came to Continal quite a long time after the building work had started. The concrete slab had been laid, and construction of the building’s timber frame was also complete. This meant our customer needed a non-screed system that could be fitted on top of the existing floor. The customer had also already laid the floor insulation, which was something that whatever UFH system we recommended would need to work around.
We also had to take the homeowner’s desired floor finish – slate tiles – into consideration, as any UFH system would need to be suitable for use with a tiled floor.
Continal Technical Sales Adviser Carol Jordan arranged for a video call with both the homeowner and the installer to discuss all the details of the project and make sure she understood the building’s unique requirements. Then, she recommended that Continal’s TileFix-18® overfloor system be installed on top of the insulation and concrete slab, with the pipe being laid at 100mm centres in the open-plan area, and at 150mm centres everywhere else.
“I found Continal Underfloor Heating a really nice company to deal with. The UFH system we chosen was easy to install throughout the ground floor of the cabin, and our Technical Sales Adviser was conscientious, friendly and knowledgeable.”
TileFix-18® is a fast-response, high compressive strength system that is ideal for both renovation and newbuild projects. Unlike many UFH systems, TileFix-18® is suitable for use with tiled floors using a standard tile adhesive, and is typically installed over existing floors.
This low-profile system offers flexibility with pipe spacings available in 100mm, 150mm and 200mm centres, and the universal TileFix® panels provide pipe routing for return loops and distribution, ensuring simple installation.
The homeowner also wanted the UFH system to be fitted with app-controlled thermostats so that he could adjust the heating remotely, so we recommended our Quantum RF digital thermostats and a Quantum hub, which offer stylish features and can be operated either remotely or manually, depending on the user’s preference.
